Guardians of Wooden Heritage
Nimble-sparrow began in a small workshop in downtown Toronto, founded by a master cabinetmaker who saw too many irreplaceable antique trunks being discarded or poorly repaired.
Two decades later, we have restored over 3,400 trunks and chests, from simple pine storage boxes to elaborate Louis Vuitton steamers. Our mission remains unchanged: preserving the craftsmanship of yesterday for the generations of tomorrow.
What Drives Our Work
Reverence for History
Every trunk that enters our workshop carries decades or centuries of human experience. We treat each piece with the respect its history deserves.
Traditional Methods
Hand-cut joinery, hide glue, hand-planed surfaces. We employ the same techniques used by the original builders whenever possible.
Honest Assessment
Not every trunk should be restored. We provide candid advice about whether restoration serves the piece and your goals.
Our Workshop Philosophy
Mass production has no place in restoration. Each trunk requires individual diagnosis and a custom treatment plan. We limit our active projects to ensure every piece receives the focused attention it deserves.
- No assembly lines or rushed timelines
- Single craftsman follows each project through completion
- Client consultation at every decision point
- Transparent documentation of all work performed
- Reversible techniques preferred when possible
Our Expertise Spans Centuries
From 17th-century dower chests to early 20th-century automobile trunks, we have hands-on experience with diverse construction methods and materials.
Colonial Era
Six-board construction, wrought iron hardware, milk paint finishes common in early North American pieces.
Victorian Period
Dome tops, embossed tin, elaborate interior compartments reflecting the golden age of travel trunk design.
Steamer Trunks
Canvas covering, wooden slats, brass hardware designed for the rigors of transatlantic voyage.
Specialty Pieces
Immigrant chests, military footlockers, theatrical wardrobes, each with unique restoration requirements.
Continuing Education
The field of antique preservation evolves constantly. Our team participates in ongoing training through the Canadian Conservation Institute and collaborates with museum conservators across the country.
This commitment to learning ensures we bring the latest conservation science to bear on traditional craftsmanship, achieving results that honor the past while standing up to the future.
